Research: Conventions that appear in dance music videos




Conventions of dance music videos
·         Songs can feature heavy intertextuality or satire towards another media text (e.g. LMFAO’s spoof of  the zombie film 28 days later)
·         Videos can include narrative elements that are spoken as oppose to sung, and feature no music
·         Songs can feature choreographed dance number involving lots of people
·         Features very extreme or expressive costumes
·         Intertextual references to other artists or genres
·         Singing into camera and directly address the audience
·         Features heavily over-exaggerated themes
·         Shots of clubs, and dance venues
·         Almost always feature performance

Shot type conventions
·         Close up of artist singing
·         Medium shots of dancers
·         Cuts on beat
·         Simple mise-en-scene
·         Eye level camera
·         Rage of pull focus and deep focus shots
·         Short ASL (2 seconds max)
·         Tracking shots/ dolly shots
