Research of Institutions : Youtube

YouTube was created in 2005, and is a video sharing service. The company is now a subsidiary of Google. YouTube was founded by  Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim.
The main selling point of YouTube was that the content was from both corporations and individuals, and you could subscribe to particular channels to see their content first.

YouTube has been rated as the second most popular website on the internet. The use of YouTube has grown exponentially, and the site has featured the first ever live coverage of a sporting event over the internet, for free.
YouTube went through an aesthetic change in 2011, when the company chose to change their entire interface and make a much sleeker design. This lead to a huge uptake in usage for the website.

Featured video no.1 - 37

Nowadays, YouTube is dominated by Gaming channels and Music channels. YouTube holds the music videos for all popular songs, and most artists have a YouTube channel that is linked to their Vevo, a platform dedicated to music videos. The most viewed videos of the present are music videos, such as 'Despacito'.

User Statistics
Gender of Audience - 62% male, 32% female
37% of 18-34 are watching YouTube regularly
Women most commonly watch beauty channels, whereas men mainly watch gaming or sports channels.

One of the key selling point of YouTube is it's content creators. 'Youtubers' are modern day celebrities. A user will watch a specific video because of who made it, or the style of it. This links to Gauntlett's theories of identity. A user will be attracted to a personality that they relate to, as it will help them to build their own identity.

Research of Target Audience - AB demographic

The Brief has give the following target audience for our coursework:

"A culturally sophisticated, 16-25 class AB demographic"

The AB demographic represents households who are of the upper middle class, or middle class backgrounds, as well as the upper class society.
As a whole, this represents the top 27% of society.
( As stated by the National Readership Survey)
This demographic is expected to have jobs such as Lawyers, CEO,s or managers.

As the target age is 16-25, it is the children of these families hat is the focus. These children will still be dependent on their families for income and support, often getting whatever they ask for.
The sort of person that the product would be aimed at, is people who live a luxurious lifestyle of holidays and parties, but would also be intelligent and culturally sophisticated enough to understand the intertextuality and postmodern ideas that could be presented in a music video such as mine.
as the brief specifically states culturally sophisticated, then the audience would need to be cultured, i.e hold an impressive education, either higher education or Advanced levels. and would need to have 'taste'. A sense of good and bad when it comes to style and presentation.

The demographic will be split into 3 groups.
1. 16-18
16-18 year old's will be going through their A-levels, and becoming very free. Their parents will probably give them an allowance, or some other form of monetary benefit that will give them the freedom to do as they please. This is time in their lives in which the party lifestyle will develop. Someone at this age will be much more carefree.

2. 18-21
At this age, sons and daughters will be expected to go to university and study to become a doctor, or lawyer, or other high class job. The parent will still probably give them money toward living costs, but the individual will start to become more free and independent. It is at this point that the person becomes Cultured and Sophisticated.

3.21-25
After university, the individual will be a fully fledged and sophisticated person, but will still be relatively poor. At this age, they will still get money from their parents, but will be starting their high class jobs, and begin to earn some serious money. The party lifestyle will return here, but it will be more mature and sophisticated tat the raves of the 16 year-old.

Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk Ft. Bruno Mars Research

Opens onto a pair of womens legs. This instantly shows a traditional representation of women and sexualises them. It also features slightly slown down cuts of the main artists performing. The tracking shots of the women then lead onto the main artists who begin to dance. There is an overlay cut of someone screaming sewn into the shot, giving quite a strange sensation.
The song begins as the camera tracks with the artists as they walk toward it. as the dance routine begins, the ASL decreases and there is cuts between medium shots and group long shots.
The next shot is a ground level shot looking up at the artists using a wide FOV, giving another unusual appearance. This effect is repeated a few times. As the chorus ends and the instrumental break begins, the camera starts to spin, and pan around the artists as the dance. The artist is very much the focus of the video. More high angle shots are used t convey the artist as confident and powerful. there is also very quick, jerky cuts that simulate very jerky movement. Next features various stereotypical scenarios, such as a hair salon and a shoe shiner, both of which use the audience as backing singers and tools in their video. The signature dance is repeated throughout the video so the audience can remember it. It is presented in a variety of ways using various unusual camera angles and shot types, such as:
Panning shots where the artist is not singing into camera,
Extreme high angle shots
Shots where the camera spins counter-clockwise.

The next change of scenery puts the artist in a jazz bar or club. This features panning shots of the artists as well as a band playing in the background. The song itself is referencing funk music and jazz, both of which are referenced in the video. This section of the video features a very quick ASL,  and has lots of shots of the different instruments playing. It then ends on the same overla of the screaming face.

The screaming head, who is also featured frequently in the video is Mark Ronson, the DJ and songwriter. This is unusual for a dace track, as when another singer has performed it, they are usually the only one focused on.

This song is quite good to look at, as it uses many artistic and unusual shot types that could be used as inspiration. The colour palette is very bright, which would suit a fairy tale theme, and the costumes are sophisticated and upmarket. The links to jazz and funk are also interesting as that links to a higher demographic of audience.
This song however, is not completely within the dance genre, and some of the themes and conventions portrayed would not be suitable for a song of this genre. The song is also completely performance based, so not much inspiration can be gained for a narrative based video.

Radiohead - Lift Research

The entire video only uses two or three camera shots. A Birds eye view from the top of the lift and one from the back left corner. The framing is similar to that of a security camera.
The song uses limited space, and instead uses the characters and a small scenery change to convey the story and themes. It also contains Easter eggs for other Radiohead songs
He narrative uses over the top and exaggerated characters give a commentary. The old lady is depicted as smaller than average and incredibly fearful, protecting her goods. There are also over exaggerated depictions of businessmen and professionals, who are all depicted as crazy and extreme.
The video does not feature any performance, but does however feature the lead singer of the band as the main character.
The very end of the video contains a shaky-cam following the lead as he walks out of the lift. The outside is a reflection of the lift and features a double of the main character. This a reference to continuity, and a never ending cycle, which is also referenced in the lyrics of the song. This could be seen as a commentary to the music industry, as artists are expected to churn out songs continuously in order to remain relevant.

This video holds quite a lot of inspiration for a video such as mine, which would have to be filmed in small spaces, or on a small budget. the use of camera angles could lead to a very unique perspective, and the way in which the narrative is portrayed in the scenery could be very useful in exploring how intertextuality can be used.
The video is not perfect however, this song would not be considered within the dance genre, meaning the style would have to change drastically. It is also very simple in its design and aesthetic, which means that the complex ideas that the brief expects you to explore would be difficult to reach.

Lyrical Analysis of my Song

"Nothing Stopping Me Now"
(feat. Kat Nestel)

Just when I realized
You been shutting me out
I start to reach for the sky
And nothing's falling down

Everybody knows
How the story goes
But fairy tales have been lying to me
Every time I try
You just run and hide
Now I'm finally feeling free

Tell me can you see me now
While I rise above the crowd
Who would of known I'd make it out
Your broken world, no

You thought you tore me down
I'm not giving up, now you know
So tell me can you see me now
Rising above
And nothing's stopping me now
Nothing's stopping me now
Nothing's stopping me

Now I know my feet
They won't fail me now
So thanks for showing me
All that I am about

Everybody knows
How the story goes
But fairy tales have been lying to me
Every time I try
You just run and hide
Now I'm finally feeling free

Tell me can you see me now
While I rise above the crowd
Who would of known I'd make it out
Your broken world, no

You thought you tore me down
I'm not giving up, now you know
So tell me can you see me now
Rising above
And nothing's stopping me now
Nothing's stopping me now
So can you see me now
Can you see me now

Tell me can you see me now
While I rise above the crowd
Who would of known I'd make it out
Your broken world, no

You thought you tore me down
I'm not giving up, now you know
So tell me can you see me now
Rising above
And nothing's stopping me now

The lyrics tell the story of a woman who has broken up with her significant other and now feels free.

There are strong links to fairy tales in the line "But fairy tales have been lying to me". suggesting that there is no such thing as a perfect reationship. It casts out the ideas of good and bad and insead embraces a more postmodern aproach to life, where there are positives and neatives in everything.

The song also has clear views on female empowerment, and encourages listeners to "rise above the crowd". This is a modern and sophisticated theme that will resonate with a higher class audience. The theme of empowerment is continued in the line "Nothings stopping me now". Suggesting that women are very strong and unstoppable.

My Choice of Song

I have chosen this song as it is cemented firmly in the dance genre, and contains lots of sophisticated themes, such as fairy tales, traditional serotypes, and female power. By using these thems, I can create a unique and sophisticated music video aimed at the correct target audience.

Calvin Harris – This is what we came for ft. Rihanna Research

Begins with establishing shot of a beach landscape. Cuts to various landscapes which provide a range of styles but share the joint theme of the cube.

Lighting changes constantly. Clothes are shiny and sophisticated, representing her as stylish and colourful.
Uses long shot, Medium shot, close up to give the feeling of zoomig without actually zooming in.
High angle with artist staring into camera. Makes the video seem more personal, helps to develop the representations portrayed.
Camera remains on Model as the background of the club comes towards her. This aims to keep Rihanna at the centre of attention and signify her importance
Tracking shot as Rihanna walks toward camera and out of the club
Over the shoulder shots suggest sexuality and flirtations behaviour.
Dancing shots of Rihanna only. Rihanna is represented as a traditional sophisticated female. She is sexualised and beautified.
Especially in the chorus, The ASL is incredibly short, showing many different shots of Rihanna dancing. Handheld camera makes the video seem more personal and relatable o the TA.
Seemingly random shot of a sports car aims to further relate to the target audience. Rihanna is sexualised to appeal to a male audience, and the sports car relates to traditional male stereotypes.
Uses both the light box and the car as projection backgrounds.
Makes gestures at the camera as if it were a person, further personifies the TA
Uses the colour test card and longshots of production gear to create a self-aware style that makes this video slightly postmodern.
Look psychedelic with the use of lighting and movement.

This video is firmly within the dance genre and features many conventions of said genre. Because of this, the video is very good to reference in making your own, as it has many of the things you would need in it.
On the other hand, this video as a very high budget and uses many effects to portray the message of the video. It uses a large walk-in Light box, and a projector to create the scenery, whilst using a sports care and projector to add difference and reference to the audience. Because of the size and costs of these effects, i would not be able to recreate them.

Practice photo shoot

These are examples of the shot types and conventions i intend to use with the practice photo shoot

  • Medium shots of model with various angles and emotions
  • Long shots of model
  • Different outfits
  • Intertextual reference to fairy tale themes
  • Sophisticated themes, such as dresses, fancy wigs or hair, and stylish clothing and scenery
  • Intertexual pastiche of pulp fiction front cover with Uma Thurman

I did not complete all of the following on the day of my photo shoot, so i intend to take a lot more photos during the summer break, exploring more of these ideas in my photography.

These are some of the better examples from the day of the shoot.

I also intend to take up to 50 more photos, as well as album covers and album artwork, all of which will be used on the website i will create for my artist.

Possible Song Choices for my Music Video

I have Narrowed down my choices of Song for music video to 3 choices.

Each choice  Must not have a music video already, and must be in-keeping with the brief given.

Choice 1 - P!NK - The King is dead but the Queen is alive

This is a very confident song abut female power. The lyrics features heavy themes of royalty and female power, Both of which are very sophisticated themes.
This song however, might be problematic as it may not entirely fit the brief. An exam board may decide that the song itself did not fit into the dance genre, and therefore not fit the brief.
This song would however be my strongest choice, as this style is familiar to me and I believe I would produce much higher results.

Choice 2 - Ariana Grande - I Don't Care

This is a much slower song, that is definitely within the genre requirements. It also features many classical rhythms so would be beneficial for the style. The song is however incredibly slow, making it hard to choreograph dance. It would also be more difficult to create a video in-keeping with the style as i am unfamiliar with it.
Another issue might arise in the themes within the song. Many are traditional and therefore not very culturally sophisticated, which is what the brief looks for.

Choice 3 - Ariana Grande - Why Try

Choice 3 is another Grande song which is firmly cemented in the dance genre. it is also a little faster making it easier to choreograph to. The themes presented within the lyrics and the melody are quite traditional, and depict a relationship between two lovers. As the themes are quite traditional, problems could arise in making it attractive to a culturally sophisticated.
